Keyword monitors: Basic and advanced queries

Learn how to create keyword monitors in Social Listening — covering basic query syntax, Boolean operators, and advanced query techniques for precise topic tracking.

Keyword Monitors are a type of monitor within Social Listening that collect digital content based on defined search queries across supported platforms. The structure of a query directly impacts the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the insights generated.

Queries can be configured using Basic or Advanced logic, depending on monitoring objectives and required precision. This logic is applied across all data sources selected for the monitor.

Basic keyword queries

Basic queries are suited for monitoring scenarios that require broad coverage without complex query logic, using simple keyword input to capture conversations related to a brand, campaign, product, or topic.

Users define keywords that the monitor should track, and the system collects posts and content containing those terms across supported sources. Queries can also be refined by including or excluding specific keywords and applying standard conditions such as language, location, or source-based filters.

Available configuration options may vary depending on the platform being monitored. Some sources allow additional conditions, such as filtering posts by specific users, excluding reposted content, or limiting results to certain languages or countries.

Advanced keyword queries

Advanced queries provide greater control by allowing users to build structured search logic using conditional expressions and filtering operators.

All configuration options available in Basic queries are also supported in Advanced queries, with expanded capabilities. A dedicated query field enables users to construct more complex search logic.

This query builder supports logical operators such as AND, OR, and NOT, which can be used to combine or exclude keywords and conditions. These operators allow for precise control over how search terms interact, making it possible to capture highly specific conversations while filtering out unrelated content.

Basic vs. Advanced queries: When to use each

Use Basic queries when monitoring objectives are straightforward and broad visibility across platforms is sufficient. They are commonly used for brand monitoring, campaign hashtag tracking, and general topic exploration.

Use Advanced queries when greater precision and control are required. Advanced logic allows users to combine conditions, apply structured filtering, and reduce noise in high-volume conversations.

The appropriate query type depends on the complexity of the topic, conversation volume, and the level of analytical precision required.
