Using the Advanced Query Builder in Keyword Monitors (Social Listening)

Updated this week

Introduction

When setting up a Keyword Monitor in Lucidya’s Social Listening solution, you can choose between two setup modes: Basic Monitor and Advanced Monitor.

  • Basic Monitor: Quick setup — select a data source and add keywords directly.

  • Advanced Monitor: Complete flexibility — build complex queries with Boolean logic and filters to achieve highly precise monitoring.

Think of Basic as a fast shortcut, and Advanced as your full toolkit when you need control and accuracy.

Step-by-Step: How to Build an Advanced Query

Advanced Monitor uses raw text input with real-time syntax validation. Here’s how to create one:

  1. Go to Social Listening → Monitors.

  2. Click New Monitor.

  3. Select Keyword Monitor.

  4. Choose Advanced Monitor.

  5. Select a Data Source (currently only the X Platform is supported — more sources coming soon).

  6. Write your query using Boolean operators and filters.

Operators Reference

The Advanced Query Builder supports Boolean operators and platform-specific filters. Some key ones:

  • AND → Both conditions must be true.

  • OR → At least one condition must be true.

  • NOT → Excludes mentions containing certain keywords.

  • NEAR/X → Finds mentions where two keywords appear within X words of each other (e.g., “refund” NEAR/5 “delay”).

  • () → Nest conditions for complex logic.

  • Author: → Filter by account handle.

  • Language: → Filter by language.

👉 See the full [Operators Table] for all supported syntax.

Query Builder Limitations

Please note the following limits:

  • At least one keyword is required.

  • Maximum query length: 40,000 characters.

  • Maximum keyword length: 60 characters.

  • Duplicate keywords are allowed.

When to Use Each Option

Basic Monitor

Best for:

  • Simple, fast monitoring of general keywords.

  • Users who don’t need advanced logic.

  • Straightforward setups with minimal configuration.

Advanced Monitor

Best for:

  • Creating precise, complex queries.

  • Combining multiple conditions with Boolean operators.

  • Filtering by accounts, languages, or timeframes for targeted monitoring.

Use Cases

Here are some ways different teams can apply Advanced Query Builder in Social Listening:

  • PR & Communications: Track brand mentions tied to crises, specific spokespeople, or competitors.

  • Product Teams: Monitor feature-specific feedback (e.g., mentions of “checkout,” “bug,” “slow”).

  • Marketing Teams: Segment mentions by campaign hashtags, influencers, or language to measure performance.

  • CX & Insights Teams: Capture conversations with negative sentiment to identify risks early.

Final Thoughts

The Advanced Query Builder in Social Listening helps you cut through noise and surface the mentions that truly matter. Whether you’re tracking customer complaints, campaign performance, or competitive activity, Boolean logic and filters give you the control to get precise, actionable results.
